The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board suspended two officers from the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos following allegations related to Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
The suspensions were prompted by claims made by social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.
Bobrisky reportedly claimed that after his conviction for abuse of naira notes in April, his six-month sentence was arranged to be served in a private apartment, allegedly orchestrated by his “godfather” and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The officers involved, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Michael Anugwa and DCC Sikiru Adekunle, were suspended, according to a memo signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, the Secretary of the Board. The memo stated:
“Following the viral video trending on social media on alleged infractions by Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service relating to Mr. Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has suspended forthwith the following Senior Officers of the Service: Michael Anugwa, DCC, In-Charge of MSCC, Kiri-Kiri, Lagos State; and Sikiru Adekunle, DCC, In-Charge of MSCC, Kiri-Kiri, Lagos State.”
In addition to the suspensions at Kirikiri, another officer, ASC II Ogbule Obinna, was suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside of the facility in Afikpo, Ebonyi State.
Furthermore, DCC Iloafonsi Ikechukwu, who serves at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, was suspended over allegations of receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
Ja’afaru Ahmed explained that the suspensions are to allow for a thorough investigation. He said:
“The suspension of these Officers is to allow for further investigation on the various allegations while assuring that the outcome would be made public when concluded.”
