The Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has secured the conviction of two brothers, Samuel Adedeji Adeboye and Charles Adedamola Adeboye, along with 33 others for internet fraud.
The convictions were handed down by Justices Ladiran Akintola, Bayo Taiwo, and O.S. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan.
The 35 convicts were prosecuted on charges related to internet fraud, including impersonation, obtaining by false pretense, and possession of fraudulent documents. Among them were Oluwadamilola Michael Omotayo, Boluwatife Ajewole Alaran, Michael Damilare Badaru, and many others.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, explained that the convicts pleaded guilty to their respective charges. He also highlighted specific cases, such as Samuel Adedeji Adeboye, who impersonated someone named James Jonathan to defraud a victim, and his brother, Charles Adedamola Adeboye, who helped internet fraudsters receive funds.
Justice Akintola sentenced the Adeboye brothers to one year in prison each, with an option of a fine—N100,000 for Samuel and N30,000 for Charles. Other convicts were given varying jail terms, with some receiving options of fines ranging from N30,000 to N500,000.
Several convicts were also sentenced to community service without the option of fines. Additionally, items recovered from the convicts, including cars such as Lexus, Toyota Camry, Mercedes Benz, and Acura, were forfeited to the federal government as proceeds of crime.
