Twitter users share last experience that made them leave Nigeria, and some are heartbreaking
Some Nigerians on social media have taken to micro-blogging site Twitter to reveal the breaking points which forced them to take a decision to leave the country.
A Twitter user Oluwaseun had shared a tweet asking Nigerians who have left the country to share the ‘last straw’ that made them take a decision to relocate.
He tweeted:
“You guys that left Nigeria, what was the final straw that made you decide to leave.”
Like a wildfire, the tweet went viral sparking a series of reactions from Twitter users as they share hilarious and heartbreaking stories of why they left Nigeria for abroad.
The tweet has received hundreds of responses and retweets spotlighting some of the agonising experiences Nigerians are exposed to daily for living in the country.
A Twitter user said he took the decision after his brother was shot but an effort to get a police report before he could be treated at the hospital became difficult as the police officer they met on duty at the police station told them he had to complete his mobile phone game ‘candy crush’ before attending to them.
He tweeted:
Brother was shot by a robber as he drove into our house. Rushed him to the hospital, hospital demanded police report before treatment, rushed to the police station, explained in details what happened and the officer said I should wait so he completes Candy crush stage 986.

Another Twitter user Emery Cromwell-Ibie said Lagos traffic forced him to yield to his wife’s request to move out of the country.
He wrote:
Dropped off a friend travelling to Benin at God is Good, Ajah park early morning while I headed to my office in V/I. She called me 4 and a half hours later that she was in Benin. I hadn’t reached Lekki Phase 1 roundabout. Called my wife immediately to say “I yield, we’re leaving” https://t.co/waaEsFe7jH

I was too embarrassed to even discuss it with people. As I walked away from that interview, I made a decision to leave. Everytime I doubted that decision, something more stupid would happen.

No salary for 6months, half-salary for longer duration. Set a business, most went into charity for both d consumers and the workers. I couldn’t stand watching colleagues struggling for basic needs, neither was I ready to watch people die cos of money. At the peak of it, I left!!

Though I still come to Nigeria often because of my mum who wouldn’t live abroad but whenever I am there, my heart is unsettled. I came back with my family in December, after traffic and bad roads and police wahala, my kids aren’t excited about visiting again.

The day that tanker fell at Otedola bridge. Made me realise that no matter how much money I make, the social structures won’t support my living to enjoy the money.

The last straw was the lekki flood that happened in August and September 2017. Govt was onlooking; no emergency response team on ground.Spent over 4hr on traffic from Ikota to Agungi. I ran away and never looked back.

Someone once told me that being in Nigeria is like being in a domestic violence relationship. There’ll always be a reason to stay till it ends you, literally.

I was fanatically pro-Nigerian when I left Nigeria for a masters degree, with concrete plans and a laser focus to return. Then I fell in love… then I was contemplating settling in Nigeria with my wife… then Buhari won the election and Nigeria entered proper one chance!!

Many things built up but the last straw:
Spent hours in court only for the case to be adjourned for the umpteenth time.
Client died weeks later in an accident getting to court from Jos to Abuja for the next adjourned date.
