Published

Nigerians on Twitter have taken to the microblogging site to mock the federal government’s plan to lift 20m Nigerians out of poverty with N5,000.

This came after the Vice President- Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, announced the launch of the COVID-19 Rapid Response Register (RRR), an emergency intervention database, for the urban poor made poorer by the pandemic.

According to Osinbajo, each household affected by the pandemic will benefit the sum of N5,000 each, monthly, for a period of six months.

he scheme would see the FG share N5000 monthly to households as it says 1 million households would benefit from the scheme.

In a statement via his Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity, Laolu Akanda, Osinbajo said: “Osinbajo today launched a technology-based Rapid Response Register which identifies urban poor people who in the next 6 months will receive N5000 monthly. In all 1 million households will benefit from this especially cash transfer being implemented by the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry.”

Speaking further, the Vice President said that “the groundbreaking success of the RRR, now emboldens us[Federal Government] to achieve our aspiration of a social security programme for a minimum of twenty million Nigerians in the next two years.”

As such, Osinbajo believes that the government’s vision to lift at least 20 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next two years begins with the flag-off of the tech-based RRR scheme.

It should be noted that the 5k scheme according to the VP will last for six months, though he did not reveal how much will be benefitted form the long term vision.
