Trump backs Iran’s World Cup participation in US games

United States President, Donald Trump, has expressed support for Iran competing on American soil during the upcoming World Cup, stating that the country should be allowed to participate despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Iran’s involvement in the tournament had been uncertain following military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28.

However, FIFA leadership has maintained that the team will take part as scheduled, with all of their group-stage matches set to be played in the United States.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated this position during the organisation’s congress on Thursday, confirming Iran’s continued inclusion in the competition.

When asked about Infantino’s remarks during a media briefing later that day, Trump appeared to endorse the decision, saying he had no objection to the FIFA chief’s stance.

“Well if Gianni said it, I’m OK.

“Did Gianni say it? Gianni Infantino – that’s a piece of work.”

Pressed further on the possibility of Iran winning matches or even the tournament, Trump acknowledged the uncertainty but dismissed concerns about potential outcomes.

“If they win we’ll have to worry about that. I’m going to have to worry about that one.

“You know what, let them play. Gianni is fantastic, he’s a friend of mine, he talked about it, I said, ‘you do whatever you want’.

“You can have them, you don’t have to have them, they probably have a good team. Do they have a good team, do you have any idea?”

When the journalist admitted uncertainty about Iran’s team strength, Trump responded with scepticism before reiterating his approval of their participation.

“It would be hard to believe actually. But let them play, right?”
