The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 14 individuals in connection with a violent outbreak during a protest in Makurdi on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

The demonstration, initially peaceful, took a tragic turn when it was hijacked by violent elements, leading to the death of a truck driver who was burned alive.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Udeme Edet, it was revealed that the protest escalated after hoodlums blocked a road in the Apir area on the outskirts of Makurdi. According to the police, the group stopped a truck by force and set it ablaze with the driver still inside. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was killed in the resulting fire.

“We strongly denounce this barbaric act. Fourteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend all other perpetrators and instigators,” SP Edet stated.

The protest, which originated at the Wurukum Roundabout, was reportedly motivated by recent security concerns in the state. In an effort to ease tensions, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, and the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barrister John Ode, visited the protest site to engage with the demonstrators and appeal for calm.

Their intervention, however, met resistance. Tensions rose as some members of the crowd attempted to attack the Deputy Governor.

“In a swift move to ensure safety and prevent a potential breakdown of law and order, officers deployed non-lethal crowd control measures such as smoke and water cannons,” the police said. “Fortunately, there were no casualties during this intervention.”

The incident involving the burning of the truck occurred later, with the police identifying the perpetrators as a separate group allegedly aligned with the protest but intent on violence.

While emphasizing the police’s commitment to upholding citizens’ rights to protest, SP Edet warned against resorting to violence.

“We acknowledge the rights of citizens to express their grievances. However, such actions must remain peaceful and within the bounds of the law. The police remain committed to protecting lives and maintaining order in the state,” she affirmed.

Authorities have heightened security in the affected areas and are calling on residents to remain calm. The police also urged members of the public to provide any information that could assist with ongoing investigations.

The Command concluded by commending those who protested peacefully and reaffirmed its resolve to ensure justice and security for all citizens in Benue State.
