A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday when a fully loaded truck crushed a pedestrian to death at the Iyana-Ishasi U-turn, inward Mile 2, Lagos State.
The incident, which happened around 11 a.m. was a result of the truck losing control due to brake failure.
Some miscreants attempted to set the truck ablaze, but security officials, including the police, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and Federal Road Safety Corps, quickly intervened to restore order.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident and explained what caused the crash.
He said, “The truck had a brake failure while moving through traffic at high speed. The driver lost control, and sadly, the vehicle hit an innocent pedestrian, causing an instant death.”
Bakare-Oki praised the quick response of LASTMA, FRSC, and police officers, who managed the situation and prevented further chaos. He also expressed his sympathy to the victim’s family.
“We deeply regret this tragic loss of life and pray for strength for the bereaved family. This accident highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to ensure safety on our roads,” he added.
He urged motorists to take road safety seriously by checking their vehicles regularly and obeying traffic rules to avoid such preventable accidents.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the General Hospital in Igando.
This incident follows another tragedy less than 24 hours earlier, where a pedestrian was killed and five others injured in a crash along the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge.
