Troops kill 16 Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters in fierce Borno operation

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have eliminated 16 members of the Boko Haram and ISWAP terror groups during a fierce engagement in Damboa, Borno State.

The confrontation occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025, following sustained indirect fire by the Nigerian Army.

According to a statement shared via the official X handle of the Nigerian Army (@HQNigerianArmy), the terrorists were detected around 1 a.m. and were immediately engaged by ground troops with coordinated fire support.

“At about 1 am today 23 May 2025, gallant troops of Operation Hadin Kai, sighted a group of ISWAP/Boko Haram terrorists in Damboa and immediately engaged them with sustained indirect fire.

The main thrust of the attack targeted the Brigade, prompting the swift deployment of air support to assist ground forces. After approximately two hours of intense engagement, the terrorists were forced to retreat after suffering casualties.”

The operation, backed by air support, resulted in a significant setback for the insurgents, who were forced to flee after sustaining losses. The military confirmed that a total of 16 terrorists were neutralized during the encounter.

The Nigerian Army also addressed concerns over damage sustained during the operation, revealing that an ammunition storage area was hit but swiftly secured without further complications.

“Troops successfully neutralized 16 terrorists in the encounter and are currently conducting a pursuit operation. Although an ammunition storage area was hit during the exchange, it was quickly brought under control with no further escalation.”

The military remains on high alert in the region as follow-up operations continue to prevent regrouping by fleeing terrorists.
