Trigger-happy policeman arrested for Abuja resident’s killing
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police officer who allegedly killed Oyebuchi Anene, a resident of Byazhin community in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja.
The incident occurred on Wednesday near Haj Estate, where Anene lived with his wife and daughter. The trouble began when Anene, on his way home, accidentally hit an okada (motorcycle) rider and his passenger.
Eyewitnesses reported that Anene stopped to ensure the okada rider and passenger were okay before continuing to his home.
However, some policemen arrived and demanded that Anene accompany them to the station, leading to an altercation.
During the altercation, one officer shot a teargas canister into Anene’s eye at close range. Anene was rushed to the Kubwa General Hospital and later referred to the National Hospital, where he died on Thursday.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST on Friday. She stated that the police officer responsible for the “accidental discharge” is currently in custody.
Adeh said, “The FCT Police Commissioner, CP Benneth Igweh, unequivocally condemns the unprofessional and disheartening conduct of the police officer and assures the family and the public of swift justice.”
