The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Kaduna has declared the 2023 governorship election in Kaduna State as inconclusive.
This decision came during the tribunal’s resumed proceedings, and it was reached with a split decision, with a ratio of 2:1.
The tribunal has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a supplementary election within 90 days to resolve the inconclusive status of the election.
The panel, comprising three members and led by Justice Victor Oviawe, issued an order for a rerun of the election in 24 polling units located in seven wards across four local governments. These polling units have a total of 16,300 registered voters.
Notably, the verdict was delivered via Zoom, as the judges opted for a virtual announcement rather than a physical presence in the tribunal hall.
The election dispute emerged from a petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Isah Mohammed Ashiru.
The PDP’s Ashiru contested the election’s outcome, which declared Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress as the Governor of Kaduna State.
The basis of their challenge lies in alleged irregularities and electoral fraud, with the PDP contending that their candidate, Isa Mohammed Ashiru, should be declared the rightful winner.
