TRANSFER: Barcelona give verdict on Arsenal’s Aubameyang

Barcelona on Arsenal's Aubameyang

Spanish giant, Barcelona, have given a verdict on the possibility of signing Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before the summer transfer window closes.

Recall that Catalans lost Lionel Messi due to their perilous financial position that has also prevented them from registering some of their new signings, however, it is reported that Barcelona are interested in landing a new striker.

Rumours in Spain had suggested that the Blaugrana had contacted Arsenal over the prospective signing of either Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette, however, UK Metro reports that it was The Gunners who initiated talks.

According to RAC1, Aubameyang was offered to Barca by Arsenal – or potentially intermediaries working on behalf of the player – to see if there was any interest in a deal.

The Gunners are trying to fund their own squad overhaul and are keen to get one of the two forwards off their books as Mikel Arteta plans his ‘unprecedented’ summer rebuild.

But Barcelona have rebuffed the approach and are not interested in signing either Aubameyang or Lacazette, while a mooted swap deal involving Philippe Coutinho is not on the cards either.

The 32-year-old striker’s enormous wages – the Arsenal skipper is believed to earn around £350,000-a-week – also mean he is a completely unrealistic target for Barca.

Instead, the Spanish side’s priority is to sell players and they are actively looking to offload Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic, while Clement Lenglet is also available for sale.

If Barca do manage to recoup a significant amount of money from transfers and reduce their wage bill then a striker signing could be back on the cards, with manager Ronald Koeman confirming he wanted a new frontman.
