A couple narrowly escaped death on Wednesday evening when a container fell on their Lexus Jeep at the busy Toyota bus stop along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.
According to the agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, the accident occurred around 6:35 pm and involved a Mack trailer carrying two 20-foot containers.
“One of the containers accidentally fell on the rear side of the moving Lexus Jeep, trapping a male adult, aged 45, and a female adult, aged 37, inside the vehicle,” Adeseye disclosed.
Emergency responders, including firefighters from the Isolo Fire Station, arrived promptly at the scene after receiving a distress call.
Sympathisers initially attempted to assist, but the combined efforts of the fire service ensured the couple was safely extricated from the wreckage without injuries.
The statement read, “The victims were rescued unhurt and joined by the trailer driver, who also escaped unscathed. All three were taken through trauma therapy to ensure their well-being.”
The accident caused significant traffic disruption at the busy Toyota bus stop.
However, operatives from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority worked swiftly to clear the wreckage and ease the resulting gridlock.
Officers from the Ilasamaja Police Division also supported the operation.
