A 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Eniola Isaac, who was trafficked to Iraq under false promises of a better life, is expected to return to Nigeria on January 3, 2025.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission confirmed the development on Thursday, following a report about her plight.

Isaac was reportedly lured to Iraq with the promise of a better job, but her experience turned into a nightmare. She faced abuse, physical assaults, and mistreatment at the hands of her employer. Seeking help, she pleaded with Nigerian authorities to facilitate her return.

NiDCOM, which oversees cases in Iraq through its mission in Jordan, stepped in to secure Isaac’s release. In an update shared on its official X page, the commission highlighted her ordeal and raised concerns about the increasing cases of human trafficking involving Nigerians.

“Eniola Isaac, a 28-year-old trafficked Nigerian girl in Iraq, is expected to return to Nigeria on January 3rd with the intervention of officials of the Nigerian mission in Jordan, which oversees Iraq,” the statement read.

The commission also mentioned another case of a Nigerian who went to Iraq as a caregiver but died under suspicious circumstances. NiDCOM has demanded an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

NiDCOM warned Nigerians about “unscrupulous agents” luring young women to Iraq with deceptive promises. “Many of these victims end up in slavery or prostitution once they arrive in the country,” the commission stated.
