Traders at the Gombe old market are counting their losses after a fire outbreak on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, destroyed at least 18 shops, leaving many business owners devastated.
Confirming the incident, the Gombe State Police Command expressed sympathy for those affected.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, described the fire as a tragic event that has dealt a heavy blow to the livelihoods of traders.
“The command recognises the devastating impact this tragedy has had on the livelihoods of those affected,” Abdullahi said.
While expressing gratitude that no lives were lost, the police spokesman acknowledged the financial losses suffered by traders and urged the public to adopt stricter fire safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He assured affected traders that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire, adding that the command remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the business community in Gombe State.
