TRACE Corps Commander deplores incessant falling of petrol tankers

The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in Ogun has appealed to petroleum tanker drivers and owners to regularly maintain their vehicles to reduce incessant breakdowns and fall on the highway.

TRACE Corps Commander/CEO, Mr ‘Seni Ogunyemi, made the appeal in an interview with the Newsmen in Ota, Ogun, when reacting to a tanker that fell on Tuesday morning at the Toll-Gate area, Ota and spilled its fuel contents on the road.

Newsmen reports that it took the personnel of TRACE, firefighters, FRSC, and police that were called to the scene several hours to bring the situation under control.

The TRACE corps commander said that the appeal became necessary due to the increasing number of Petroleum tankers that fall and spill their contents on the roads.

Ogunyemi said that the frequent falling of tankers and other articulated vehicles on the highway posed a serious danger to other road users, especially cars.

He recalled that a Petroleum tanker killed five persons at the Sagamu Interchange, inbound Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, last week.

Ogunyemi also said that another tanker claimed the life of a person at Owode-Ijako, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway last week.

“Besides, no fewer than six tankers were involved in accidents in the last one week in Ogun.

“As a traffic agency, we cannot continue to allow Petroleum tanker owners to endanger and kill innocent people,” he said.

Ogunyemi enjoined them to desist from acts that could endanger the lives of other road users and loss of lives on the roads.

He also called on tanker owners to install a safety valve on their vehicles to avoid mishaps on the roads.

Ogunyemi lauded the support of sister security agencies to bring the situation to normal, saying “their assistance averted what would have been a serious tragedy’’.
