Tottenham sack manager Postecoglou despite Europa League victory

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked their manager, Ange Postecoglou, just over two weeks after he led the club to win the UEFA Europa League.

The announcement came on Friday, June 6, through a statement on Tottenham’s official X account. The club said the decision followed “a review of performances and after significant reflection.”

Postecoglou made history on May 21 by guiding Tottenham to a 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao. That victory gave Spurs their first European trophy in 41 years and ended the club’s 17-year wait for silverware. It also earned them a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

However, despite the European success, the club finished 17th in the Premier League, barely escaping relegation. Tottenham lost 22 out of 38 league matches this season — their worst domestic performance since they were relegated in the 1976–77 season.

Chairman Daniel Levy and the board said they had to make a difficult but necessary choice.

“The board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place,” the club’s statement read.

“Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”

Postecoglou, who joined Tottenham from Celtic exactly two years ago, had a mixed spell in north London. He was praised for his bold attacking style but criticised for poor league results and inconsistent team performances.

The club has not yet named a replacement, but fans are already calling for a manager who can build on the Europa League success while improving league results.

As of now, Tottenham sit just above relegated teams Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton in the final league table.
