Tottenham crash out of Carabao cup
Fulham delivered a stunning upset to Tottenham during the Carabao Cup’s second round, clinching a thrilling victory in a penalty shootout at Craven Cottage. This outcome marks Tottenham as the first Premier League squad to be eliminated from this season’s Carabao Cup.
The hosts prevailed 5-3 on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw in normal time, with Marek Rodak saving from Davinson Sanchez to set up Kenny Tete for the decisive penalty.
Fulham also scored through Andreas Pereira, Raul Jimenez, Joao Palhinha and Harry Wilson in the shootout.
Tottenham had taken the lead in the first half when Micky van de Ven turned Tom Cairney’s cross into his own net, but Richarlison equalized after the break with a header from Wilson’s corner.
It was Tottenham’s first defeat under new manager Ange Postecoglou, who made nine changes from the team that beat Bournemouth 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.
Tottenham will try to bounce back when they visit Burnley on Saturday, while Fulham will hope to build on their momentum when they face a tough challenge against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
