Udinese faces closed-doors match penalty after racist incident

Published

Italian football club Udinese has been handed a punishment requiring them to play a match behind closed doors in response to the racist abuse directed at AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan during their recent match.

The incident led to AC Milan players temporarily walking off the pitch, resulting in a suspension of play for approximately 10 minutes.

A man suspected of shouting racist abuse at Maignan has been issued a five-year ban from all football stadiums in Italy.

The 46-year-old, identified as a known criminal in the province of Udine, has also been banned for life from Udinese’s Bluenergy Stadium.

The Udine Public Prosecutor’s office imposed a nationwide sanction in addition to the club’s lifetime ban.

Authorities are utilizing CCTV footage and social media to identify any additional individuals involved in the incident. Maignan, a 28-year-old goalkeeper born in French Guiana and playing for the France national team, reported alleged monkey chants earlier in the match.

This led to an announcement in the stadium urging fans to cease such behavior.

During the game, Maignan was seen remonstrating with referee Fabio Maresca, eventually removing his gloves and walking off the field, followed by his teammates.

Speaking to DAZN after the match, Maignan stated, “They made monkey noises, and it’s not the first time it’s happened to me.” Udinese has committed to identifying those responsible for the racial abuse.
