Nunez ends goal drought as Liverpool beat Burnley 2-0
Darwin Nunez brought an end to his goal drought, and Diogo Jota made a impactful return as Liverpool claimed a 2-0 victory at Burnley, securing their place at the summit of the Premier League.
Nunez, who had gone 12 games without scoring for Liverpool, broke the deadlock with a superb low finish from just outside the penalty area within the first six minutes.
Despite Burnley’s eye-catching approach play, they struggled to find a cutting edge, and Liverpool had opportunities to extend their lead.
Cody Gapko had a goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up, and Mohamed Salah’s dipping effort grazed the bar. The trend continued in the second half, with Harvey Elliott having a goal ruled out after VAR intervention.
Although Burnley rallied late in the game, Liverpool sealed the points when substitute Diogo Jota, making a comeback from injury, showcased his prowess with an excellent finish from a tight angle.
The result propels Liverpool two points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have played a game less. Arsenal has the chance to reclaim the top spot when they face West Ham on Thursday.
Looking ahead, Burnley, positioned 19th and five points behind 17th-placed Everton, will face Villa on Saturday, while Liverpool is set to host Newcastle on New Year’s Day.
