Niger Abduction: Bandits with RPG are terrorists, Nigerians fume

Published

The news of the killing and abduction of some students and staff of Science College, Kagara, in Niger State, by ‘bandits’ on Wednesday morning has left a number of Nigerians angry.

According to reports, the suspected bandits killed a student after they stormed the school in the early hours of February 17, around 2am.

The level of insecurity in the country is becoming unbearable as banditry has risen to an alarming rate amidst ethnic clashes and abduction and killings by AK-47 wielding Fulani Herdsmen, amongst other things pushing the country to a boiling point.

Hours after the kidnap of the Niger students and staff, the suspected bandits reportedly released a video of the abducted persons as they could be seen brandishing sophisticated weapons.

Asides from what looks like AK-47s, one of the suspected bandits could be seen holding a shoulder-fired missile weapon that launches rockets equipped with an explosive warhead known as a rocket-propelled grenade (often abbreviated RPG).

The sight of the RPG has left Nigerians who were condemning the act to question the need to refer to the suspects as bandits instead of terrorists.
