Max Verstappen wins record 16th race of Formula One season
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, becoming the first Formula One driver to take 16 victories in a season.
The 26-year-old Dutchman also equalled French great Alain Prost’s haul of 51 career wins with his fifth triumph in six editions of the Mexican race.
Only three drivers have won more races.
Verstappen started the race from third position on the grid, but quickly moved into the lead and never looked back.
He was cruising to victory when the race was red-flagged just before the halfway point due to a crash involving Haas driver Kevin Magnussen.
After the restart, Verstappen maintained his lead and crossed the finish line ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
“We are experiencing an incredible season,” Verstappen said after the race. “Today, we had to start P3 but I think the pace of the car was very, very good.”
When asked about his next goal, Verstappen said, “Seventeen, 18? I don’t know.”
Red Bull have already won 18 of the 19 races so far this season.
