Chairman of United Bank for Africa, Tony Elumelu, has cancelled his popular TOE All-White Party in honour of the workers who died in the September fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

Elumelu announced the cancellation on Tuesday through a message shared on his Instagram story. He said he and his wife, Dr Awele Elumelu, decided that holding the annual December 23 celebration would be inappropriate so soon after the tragedy.

“We’ve received countless messages about our annual TOE All-White Party scheduled for December 23. Your enthusiasm means a great deal to us. But following the recent fire incident that claimed precious lives, Awele and I have decided to cancel the party this year. This season will be devoted to remembering and honouring those we lost. They remain forever in our hearts,” he wrote.

The business community was shaken when a fire broke out at the six-storey Afriland Towers on September 16, 2025. The blaze started in the basement inverter room, releasing toxic smoke from a burning lithium battery inverter. Although there were no burn-related deaths, ten people died after inhaling the smoke, which was filled with carbon monoxide and reduced oxygen in the building.

Elumelu said the family will use this December to reflect on the loss and honour the victims, noting that the party will return on December 23, 2026. He also thanked the public for their understanding and sent out Christmas wishes.
