Nigerian music star, Tiwa Savage, has spoken candidly about her experience since departing Mavin Records, revealing that she misses the close-knit support system she once shared with music executive Don Jazzy and other members of the label.
The Afrobeats singer made the disclosure during a recent appearance on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by media personality Joey Akan. During the conversation, Tiwa reflected on the emotional impact of leaving the label she joined in 2012 before signing with Universal Music Group in 2019.
According to the award-winning artiste, record labels often provide emotional support that many people overlook. She explained that during her time at Mavin, she regularly leaned on Don Jazzy and fellow artistes whenever she faced online backlash or personal challenges.
“Whenever there’s a controversy online, I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts and we would talk about it,” she said.
Tiwa added that the environment within the label allowed her to be emotionally open without fear of criticism. “I would cry if I had to cry and we would get through it,” she added.
The singer, however, admitted that things became different after transitioning to an international label structure. She noted that foreign labels tend to prioritise business operations and may not always pay attention to the emotional well-being of artistes.
“But being with a foreign label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part,” she stated.
Tiwa Savage also advised emerging artistes to be cautious when choosing record labels. She warned that some companies focus mainly on profits and view artistes primarily as commercial assets. The singer emphasised that emotional care and mental well-being should be considered just as important as financial success in the entertainment industry.
