Tiwa Savage faces backlash over comments on Oyo school kidnapping

Nigerian music star, Tiwa Savage, has sparked reactions online following her comments about the recent kidnapping incident in Oyo State.

The tragic incident, which occurred weeks ago, left many Nigerians devastated after several schoolchildren were abducted from their school by armed attackers.

During the incident, a teacher reportedly lost his life, while disturbing footage of the attack later surfaced online.

Savage eventually reacted to the development nearly two weeks later, revealing that she only became aware of the incident after seeing fellow singer Spyro speak about insecurity in the state.

According to the singer, she attempted to contact people for more details because the matter was not receiving widespread attention online.

She further explained that she later came across a post by media personality KieKie, where she discovered that the incident had taken place almost two weeks earlier. In the video, the singer appeared visibly emotional as she shook her head and bowed down while reflecting on the tragedy.

Her reaction, however, triggered criticism from some social media users, who accused her of being selective about national issues. Several commenters labelled her “pro-Tinubu,” while others claimed celebrities often avoid speaking on sensitive matters for political reasons.

Some critics also mocked her reaction, joking that she deserved awards such as the Kids’ Choice Awards, Emmy, or Oscar for the video. Others questioned how she could remain unaware of such a major incident for nearly two weeks and still offer limited comments afterward.

One social media user alleged that the singer was unwilling to “bite the hand that feeds her,” suggesting she deliberately avoided speaking on the issue earlier.

In her words:

“The kidnapping that happened in Oyo State, it was just yesterday that Spyro was speaking about it, that I heard about it. I tried to reach out to some people to know the background story because it was not trending. I saw KieKie’s post, and she said it was almost two weeks ago.”
