President Bola Tinubu is set to attend the national command premiere of “MKO,” a feature-length documentary chronicling the life and political legacy of the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day anniversary.
The event will take place on October 1 at the newly renovated Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos. President Tinubu, who is returning from a working visit to Europe, is expected to touch down in Lagos ahead of the screening.
Directed by Hollywood-based Nigerian-American filmmaker Ose Oyamendan, “MKO” revisits the turbulent events surrounding the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Abiola’s subsequent detention, and the nation’s prolonged pro-democracy struggle.
The documentary premiered internationally at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in the UK in June 2026. It features rare archival footage alongside first-hand accounts from key figures of the era, including former heads of state General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, and President Tinubu himself, who participated in the pro-democracy movement.
Distributed by Nile Entertainment, the film will roll out in commercial cinemas nationwide on October 2, following the Independence Day debut.
