President Bola Tinubu has vowed that the 16 soldiers killed last week in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, will receive due recognition for their sacrifices.

Speaking during the breaking of Ramadan fast at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu assured that the fallen soldiers would be given proper burial rites and honored nationally.

“The sacrifices made by our brave soldiers in Okuama will not be forgotten. We will ensure they receive the respect and recognition they deserve,” Tinubu said.

His statement comes as Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, emphasized the need to apprehend the perpetrators and treat them as criminals. Diri urged full support for the military and security agencies in bringing the killers to justice.

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, revealed that access to Okuama was still restricted for the police due to ongoing volatility in the area.

Tinubu expressed condolences, saying, “In responding to distress calls, they met the end of their lives in a savage manner. Let us sympathize and acknowledge their worth.”

He pledged further actions to honor the fallen soldiers, stating, “I will soon make further pronouncements, but they must have a befitting burial and national honors.”

Addressing the National Assembly, Tinubu urged discretion in summoning heads of MDAs for oversight functions to prevent disruptions in governmental operations.

“We must find a balance in our oversight functions. While oversight is crucial, excessive summoning can impede service delivery,” Tinubu advised.

He commended the cooperation between the executive and legislature, noting their joint efforts in passing legislation to benefit Nigerians.

Tinubu urged legislators to prioritize their constituents, especially during Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of compassion and support for the less privileged.

“We are making sacrifices for the country, and we are assuring citizens that there is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel,” Tinubu concluded, urging faith and support for those in need.
