President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, after they booked their place in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
D’Tigress defeated Senegal 75–68 in a tough semi-final clash at the Palais des Sports in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday, marking their fifth straight appearance in the tournament final.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, Tinubu praised the team for their discipline and focus throughout the tournament.
“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament—qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” Tinubu said.
The President also celebrated the team’s qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments set to take place in March 2026.
He specially praised Rena Wakama, D’Tigress’ head coach, for her role in leading the team.
“I especially commend Rena Wakama, the team’s first female Head Coach, whose leadership and experience—both on the court and now from the bench—continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,” Tinubu said.
The President expressed full support for the team as they prepare to chase their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall.
