President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Management Agency to provide immediate help to victims of a severe flood in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
The flood, which is being called the worst in recent decades, has displaced thousands of residents and damaged important facilities like the Post Office and Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
In a statement on Tuesday, President Tinubu expressed his deep concern about the disaster, which was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam. He offered his condolences to the people of Borno State, especially those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
“The worst flood in recent decades has displaced thousands of residents and affected facilities such as the Post Office and Maiduguri Teaching Hospital,” the statement said. “President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster.”
Tinubu has called for the immediate evacuation of people from the affected areas and assured Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of federal support to meet the urgent needs of those impacted by the flood.
“While relevant authorities are still assessing the damage wrought by the flood, the President calls for the immediate evacuation of people from affected areas,” the statement added. “President Tinubu assures Governor Zulum that the Federal Government is ready to collaborate to address the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected people.”
He has also ordered NEMA to assist the flood victims and is committed to mobilizing federal resources to support Borno State during this challenging time.
