Renowned Nigerian playwright, Prof Wole Soyinka, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu disregarded his counsel against running for the presidency.

Soyinka made this disclosure during a courtesy visit to Tinubu at his residence in Lagos, where he aimed to check on the President and his wife despite his earlier advice.

In an interview with reporters following the visit, the literary icon shared that he had presented a comprehensive seven-point agenda to President Tinubu during their discussions.

Soyinka described the visit as “embarrassing” since it harked back to his previous attempt, about five years ago, to dissuade Tinubu from pursuing a presidential candidacy.

“I came here with a seven-point agenda, and we had a very thorough discussion on those items. Actually, it’s an embarrassing visit because when I visited him the last time, it was to try and persuade him not to run for office,” Soyinka explained.

He continued, recounting how he had urged both Tinubu and Atiku to step aside, allowing younger individuals to take the reins of leadership.

Reflecting on the present visit, Soyinka expressed his intention to gauge how President Tinubu and his wife were navigating the challenges facing Nigeria, concluding with well-wishes for a Happy Christmas to them.
