President Bola Tinubu has addressed a significant financial matter by clearing the N12 billion owed to the Super Eagles and other national sports teams.
The announcement, made on Sunday highlights the settlement covering 15 months of salaries for senior national team coaches, allowances, and commitments to various teams, including females and the Under-20 national team.
The statement reads, “President @officialABAT has approved the payment of N12 billion outstanding backlog for Nigeria’s National teams of various sports, which includes Super Eagles and others. The payment entails the clearing of the senior national team coach salaries running up to 15 months, payments of allowances and promises due to the senior national teams, females, and Under-20 national team.”
This development comes as the Super Eagles prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations later this month, providing timely support for the team’s financial needs.
In 2020, the Super Eagles had voiced concerns about the delay in releasing the approved N1.5 billion intended for their participation in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. The recent settlement addresses these lingering financial matters and aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to supporting national sports teams.
Additionally, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa shed light on the players’ financial situation, stating, “Regarding the bonus, I think they are just owing us for two games now. Yeah, two games. There is no other outstanding outside these two games.” Musa emphasized that the team would hold discussions with the coach and NFF officials to determine the next steps forward.
