President Bola Tinubu has honored several prominent Nigerians with posthumous national awards during his Democracy Day address to the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday.

The recipients include: MKO Abiola (presumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election), Humphrey Nwosu (former chairman of National Electoral Commission) , Umaru Yar’Adua (late former President), Wole Soyinka (Nobel laureate), Bishop Matthew Kukah (Sokoto Diocese cleric)

The awards were announced as Nigeria marked its 26th Democracy Day anniversary. President Tinubu recognized these individuals for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.

The ceremony comes 32 years after the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll.
