Tinubu awards GCON honour to Akpabio, CJN Kekere-Ekun

On Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, President Bola Tinubu conferred the prestigious national honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger on Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

The announcement came during President Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast on Tuesday in Abuja. He revealed that more recipients of national honours for 2024 would be announced soon.

“The Senate President and the Chief Justice of the Federation have been conferred with the honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON),” Tinubu said during his speech.

In addition to Akpabio and Kekere-Ekun, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas were awarded the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic. Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu received the Commander of the Order of the Niger.

In his address, President Tinubu assured Nigerians that better days were ahead despite the current challenges. He called on the nation’s citizens to remain hopeful and resilient.

“The challenges of the moment must always make us believe in ourselves. We are Nigerians—resilient and tenacious. We always prevail and rise above our circumstances,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to stay united in building a future that reflects the aspirations of all its people, adding, “Together, we will cultivate a Nigeria that resonates with pride, dignity, and shared success.”
