President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, at the State House in Abuja to celebrate their record-breaking fifth straight AfroBasket title.
The team was honoured with national awards and cash gifts during a reception held at the new banquet hall of the Presidential Villa. Each player received the Order of the Niger (OON), a flat, and $100,000. Members of the coaching crew were also awarded $50,000 each.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented the president at the event, praised the players for making the country proud.
“You have shown dedication, strength, and the true Nigerian spirit,” Shettima said. “You are worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.”
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, also welcomed the team, who arrived at the Villa around 5:05pm.
D’Tigress secured the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship title after beating Mali 78–64 in the final game held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
It was the team’s seventh continental title overall and their fifth in a row.
Also present at the event were the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Senate Committee Chairman on Youth and Sports Development, Garba Maidoki, and House Committee Chairman on Sports, Kabiru Amadou.
Monday’s event came days after a similar celebration was held for the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, for winning their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco.
