President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The programme, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Health, was officially launched on Thursday at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu described the selection process as more than just a recruitment exercise, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians.

“Your selection is more than a recruitment; it proves our commitment to creating a nation where equal opportunities are available to every Nigerian, irrespective of social status, gender, or creed. You are this country’s greatest asset, and we are committed to fostering a bright future where Nigeria stands as a nation of pride for all,” Tinubu said.

The initiative, which will see one fellow recruited from each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, is part of broader efforts to equip young professionals with the skills needed to drive healthcare innovation and reform.

“With over 60 per cent of Nigerians under 30, we boast one of the most energetic, resourceful, and dynamic youth populations globally. This presents unparalleled opportunities to drive innovation, economic prosperity, and social transformation,” Tinubu added.

The President urged the newly employed fellows to see themselves as future leaders of Nigeria’s healthcare system, stressing that their role would be critical in building a sustainable and effective health sector.

“Healthcare is a critical pillar of national development. No country can thrive if its people are unhealthy. An unsustainable health program poses risks, while sustainable development hinges on a robust healthcare system. You are the pillars of this vision, and I am proud to be here with you today,” he stated.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Mohammed Pate, expressed optimism about the impact of the fellows, noting that they were selected from a pool of 360,000 applicants based on merit.

“I am here to inform you that the social movement to improve the health of Nigerians has begun, and we are already witnessing positive results,” Pate said.

Other dignitaries at the event, including Finance Minister Wale Edun, Youth Minister Ayodele Olawande, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, also commended the initiative and encouraged the fellows to seize the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development.
