Tinubu announces plans for local solar panel, EV battery production

President Bola Tinubu has lauded the inauguration of Nigeria’s largest lithium processing plant in Lafia, Nasarawa State, emphasizing the country’s appeal for foreign investment.

During a meeting with Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, accompanied by Chinese executives, Tinubu highlighted the significance of the lithium processing plant built by Avatar New Energy Materials Company Limited and the new investment announced by Canmax Technologies.

Expressing optimism about Nigeria’s potential, Tinubu urged the Chinese firms to prioritize environmental protection, community engagement, and corporate social responsibility initiatives in their operations.

He emphasized the country’s readiness to embrace solar panel and battery production, stating, “Nigeria is a huge market for solar panels. I do not see why these panels and batteries cannot be produced here. Our youths are vibrant and skilled.”

Tinubu emphasized the importance of responsible mining practices, stating, “You must not leave the community in ruins as you explore for our high-grade minerals. You must be concerned with cooperation and always care for the community.”

Governor Sule expressed gratitude for Tinubu’s support and highlighted the potential of the newly commissioned company, which has projected significant turnover and long-term lithium mining prospects in Nasarawa State.

Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake, outlined proactive measures to address risks posed by abandoned mines across the country and emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous participation and economic empowerment in the mining sector.

In response, the Chinese executives affirmed their commitment to adhering to mining regulations and fulfilling corporate social responsibilities to host communities.
