TikTok has removed more than 2.1 million videos from its platform in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024, as part of its ongoing efforts to enforce community guidelines and create a safer environment for users.
According to the platform’s Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, released on Tuesday, the removed content represents less than 1% of the total uploads in Nigeria during that period.
The report highlighted that 99.1% of the videos were removed proactively before users reported them, and 90.7% were taken down within 24 hours of being posted.
These actions reflect TikTok’s commitment to moderating harmful content and maintaining platform safety.
The Chinese-owned video platform emphasized its continued investment in advanced technologies to enhance content moderation and manage potential risks.
It also reiterated its dedication to transparency and user safety for its diverse audience in Nigeria and across the globe.
Globally, TikTok revealed that it removed over 178 million videos by June 2024, with 144 million of those removals conducted via automated systems.
The company reported a proactive detection rate of 98.2%, underscoring its growing efficiency in addressing harmful content before it can reach users.
TikTok, owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, is working to ensure that its moderation systems keep pace with its growing user base.
ByteDance is a private company with a global investor base, and its ownership is divided among institutional investors (60%), its founders (20%), and employees (20%).
