A drone attack in Jordan resulted in the deaths of three American troops, with 34 others sustaining injuries.
The incident occurred while the victims were asleep in tents at a location known as Tower 22, situated in northeast Jordan near the Syrian border.
US President Joe Biden attributed the attack to “radical Iran-backed militant groups” operating in Syria and Iraq.
He stated, “While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.” This marks the first instance of US troops being killed in the region since the commencement of the conflict in Gaza.
Biden affirmed the commitment to combat terrorism, vowing, “We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism,” and emphasized that those responsible for the attack will be held accountable.
Contrary to the US claim, a spokesman for Jordan’s government asserted that the attack did not transpire on Jordanian soil and maintained that it occurred in Syria.
Jordan, a strategic location neighboring Iraq, Israel, the West Bank, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, has traditionally served as a base for around 3,000 US troops.
Although US troops stationed in Iraq and Syria have previously faced drone and missile attacks during the Gaza conflict, this incident marks the first assault on troops stationed in Jordan.
The identities of the deceased service members will remain undisclosed for 24 hours, pending notification of their next of kin, according to US officials.
