Three people were reportedly shot during separate attacks on state events. A baby was also injured after inhaling teargas used by police to control the situation on Wednesday in Rivers State.

The attacks occurred at two events in the state organized by supporters of Governor Sir Siminialayi Fubara.

The incidents took place in Omerelu Community in Ikwerre Local Government Area and Eliozu Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Reports suggest that supporters of Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, were involved in the attacks.

These supporters are believed to be opposed to the current state administration and are aligned with Hon. Martin Amaewhule, the factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The caretaker Chairman of Ikwerre LGA, At Omerelu, Darlington Orji, was attending an empowerment program when attackers disrupted the event. A source who wished to remain anonymous said, “The shooting at Omerelu happened because some boys loyal to former LGA Chairman Samuel Nwanosike stormed the event. About three people were shot, and many cars were destroyed.”

At Eliozu, the state government had organized a health outreach for women and children. This event, held close to Amaewhule’s home, was also attacked. Supporters of Amaewhule reportedly tried to enter the event, leading to a confrontation with Fubara’s supporters.

During the clash, anti-riot police were deployed to the scene with heavy gunfire and teargas. Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko explained, “A distress call was received from the health center in Eliozu. Supporters of two separate political factions were fighting. The police responded with anti-riot tactics to restore order. An investigation is underway.”

The attacks and police response led to the injury of a baby who inhaled teargas, and the situation remains under investigation.
