Three reasons Paul Pogba might not excel at Man Utd, number 3 will shock you

Published

Few hours ago, Manchester United announced on its website that French midfielder, Paul Pogba has completed his world-record £89m transfer to the Old Trafford.

It was disclosed that the 23-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year deal to return to Man Utd after four years away, having left United for Juventus for £1.5m in 2012.

Pogba, who has signed a five-year deal, added: “This is the right club for me to achieve everything I hope to.”

Reports say United will pay the Italian champions 105m euros for Pogba, plus five million euros (£4.5m) in performance-related bonuses, and other costs, including five million euros if Pogba signs a new contract.

BBC reports that the fee surpasses the £85m Real Madrid paid Tottenham for Wales forward Gareth Bale in 2013.

So what will Man Utd be getting for their money? Let’s take a look at three weaknesses of world’s most sought-after players this summer.

Passing Accuracy:

Undoubtedly, Pogba is a player who control the midfield at will. However, it might come as a surprise to many that his passing accuracy isn’t top-notch.

His percentage of completion of passes in the last two seasons with Juventus, when compared to former Man Utd’s midfielders like Paul Scholes and David Beckham, is average at best.

That same figure would put him in the bottom six of worst passers when compared with the likes of Xavi, Pirlo, Ozil and Fabregas.

Clearly, Pogba must work on this aspect of his game.

Tackling:

Pogba relies on his physicality to author much of his game.

As such, you might expect that when it comes to tackling the opposition, the Frenchman would win far many more duels than he loses.

To find that he recorded only 47 percent success rate of his attempted tackles last season—is a shock.

If authorities at Old Trafford signed him to be a midfield powerhouse, he’ll need to put his foot in a bit more than he has done recently—and ensure that he comes away with the football.

Upper-body strength is all well and good, but a bit more bravery on the deck might be just what Pogba needs.

Focus:

By his own admission, Pogba suffers from a lack of concentration at times during games.

When asked in a recent interview on why he always lose concentration at some stage in a match, he said: “It’s always been that way. I don’t do it on purpose, but sometimes I have to release a little bit, it’s me, it’s the person. When I hear that (criticism) it wakes me up a little bit, it makes me open my eyes.”

For a player Man Utd spent £89m to get, the least they will expect is a fully concentrated player at all times.

However, despite the aforementioned shortcomings of Pogba, below are some of the strengths of his game that could win Man Utd laurels:

Engine:

There probably aren’t too many midfielders who can keep going in the manner that Pogba can.

With a rangy stride and the effortless way in which he glides across the turf, the Frenchman has an extraordinary engine and just keeps on going.

It could be just the sort of thing required if Man Utd need to get out of a hole they found themselves in the last couple of season. As the opposition begin to tire, there’s no better time to have someone still capable of putting on the afterburners and driving at the heart of the defence.

Power:

The worst thing opposition midfielders can do is to cede possession and allow Pogba the room to drive forward.

One of the best facets of his game is his ability to dribble with the ball.

This is the role we believe to be his best: a box-to-box responsibility that allows him to extend those long loping legs and utilise his powerful frame in one-v-one situations.Mental strength:

One quality that sets Pogba apart from everyone else is his mental toughness in the most difficult of situations. Call it confidence, call it swagger, in fact call it whatever you like, Pogba possesses it all.

Versatility:

The cherry on the icing on the cake of Pogba’s all-round game is his versatility in the midfield.

He has proven it many times that he can play as a box-to-box powerhouse or any other variant.

In Man Utd’s’s midfield, that kind of a player would give coach Jose Mourinho so many more options should there be injuries or suspensions.
