Three persons have been confirmed dead, several others injured, and multiple houses destroyed following an attack on Garga community in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias.
The assault occurred late Monday, February 16.
Sources said the attackers, estimated to be over 100 and armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the community on motorcycles, firing indiscriminately.
The gunfire left three people dead and several others wounded, while residents fled into nearby bushes and rocky areas for safety.
The assailants reportedly set homes ablaze and carted away food supplies and livestock during the raid.
A resident, Salihu Garga, who spoke to DAILY POST, described the repeated attacks on the area as alarming, saying the community has been left vulnerable due to inadequate security presence.
“The Fulani bandits have found it very easy to attack communities in Kanam especially Garga. It has become a regular pattern because we do not have the security operatives to protect us.
“Yesterday (Monday) evening, the bandits came again and like they do, began shooting at the people, killing three and injuring several others. They also burnt down people’s houses and stole food items and livestock.
“It was only when local vigilantes and hunters from Garga and some neighbouring villages mobilized and went after them that the bandits left. Presently, some people are still missing and we don’t know if they are alive or dead,” Kanam said.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Plateau State, SP Alfred Alabo, for confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages to his phone were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
