Three people lost their lives in the Moscow region after drone strikes hit areas surrounding the Russian capital in what officials described as a major overnight assault.
Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov said one woman died when an unmanned aerial vehicle struck a private residence, while another person remained trapped beneath the debris. He added that two men were also killed during the attacks.
“Since 3 o’clock in the morning, air defence forces have been repelling a large-scale UAV attack on the capital region,” he said, noting that four others sustained injuries and several infrastructure facilities were affected.
Authorities in Moscow reported that air defence units intercepted at least 74 drones during the night. Officials said 12 people were injured in the capital.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that falling drone debris caused limited destruction in several locations.
“Minor damage has been recorded at the sites where debris fell,” he posted on Telegram.
According to officials, a total of 120 drones were intercepted over the last 24 hours.
The renewed wave of attacks comes after Russia and Ukraine resumed hostilities following a prisoner exchange and the end of a three-day ceasefire earlier in the week.
Although Russian authorities did not identify where the drones originated, Ukraine has frequently launched strikes inside Russian territory in response to sustained Russian military bombardments over the past four years. Kyiv maintains that its operations focus on military and energy infrastructure.
While the wider Moscow region has repeatedly faced drone incidents, direct strikes on the city itself have remained comparatively uncommon.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pledged on Friday to intensify retaliatory attacks, one day after a Russian strike on Kyiv reportedly killed 24 people.
