Three people have died and nine others rescued after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The building, located at Ota Ona Junction near the Mobil Filling Station, came crashing down on Monday, May 27, 2025. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident and said rescue efforts are still ongoing.

LASEMA’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, in a statement through the agency’s spokesperson, Amodu Shakiru, said the collapsed structure was behind a small bungalow made up of two rooms and a parlour on a land area of about 648 square metres.

“A total of 14 people were in the building when it collapsed. Ten adult males, aged between 28 and 35, were rescued and rushed to the hospital,” the statement read.

According to LASEMA, three bodies have been recovered so far — two adult men and a teenage girl. Their remains have been handed over to officers at Igbogbo Police Station.

Rasheed Fatuga, a Facebook user, had earlier raised the alarm about the collapse, saying the building was directly opposite the Mobil Filling Station in the Ota-Ona area.

Emergency teams from Agbowa, Alausa, and Cappa were quickly sent to the site. The response squads — known as Lion, Tiger, and Eagle teams — arrived with heavy-duty equipment, including an excavator and floodlights to support the rescue work.

The cause of the collapse is still unknown at the time of this report.

Officials say the remaining structure is now being pulled down to ensure safety in the area.

Agencies involved in the rescue operation include the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Teams, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

This incident comes just weeks after a similar building collapse in Ojodu Berger area of Lagos in April, which killed five people. That building was also under construction and housed a popular restaurant.

Authorities have again reminded builders to follow safety rules and get proper approval before starting construction.
