Some single Nigerian ladies have narrated the difficulty they experience in securing apartments in some parts of the country due to their marital status.

The ladies who took to social media to narrate their ordeal said despite being financially independent to live on their own, some landlords, especially in states like Lagos and Oyo, always refuse to rent their apartments to single ladies.

An Ibadan-based baker simply identified as Nike said a landlord asked her why she is not married yet at her age (34) and told her he can’t rent out his apartment to a single lady.

She tweeted via her handle @TheCakeChancery:

Got a 4 bedroom duplex that I really love today and the Landlord said he can’t rent it out to me because I am NOT MARRIED .. This “you’re not married” thing hit me differently today mehn, never knew it will stop me from getting apartment of my choice . Tragic

Please don’t leave your parents house if they didn’t ask you to pack abeg, Landlords are waging war on people (unmarried). Stay in your father’s house and enjoy the free rent.”

Nike added:

“What do you do? “ 650k apartment is too much for unmarried lady to move into” “ where did u get the money from” “ why are u not married at 34, does that mean you’re irresponsible?” I didn’t know when I started crying. Ontop house ooo, God will punish that landlord for me.”

Tosin Toge – a pharmacist, according to her Twitter bio, also said she couldn’t rent her choice apartment in Ibadan not because she couldn’t afford it, but because of her present marital status.

She wrote:

“So I got a decent apartment but they can’t let it out to me because I’m not married.”

Other ladies who have had similar experiences have also taken to Twitter to share their story and advised others to always go to the landlords with a male friend or wear a ring to indicate they are married or have a partner.

Temitope Arise blamed the landlord’s decision on their past experiences with single ladies.

She tweeted:

“I feel you couldn’t blame them too much. Societal influence, atrocities committed by single ladies amongst other things has caused them to misbehave sometimes. But not all of them do that. By the way, do not succumb to lying to have been married. My opinion.”
