Popular rap musician, CDQ, has dismissed the term local rapper has been nonexistent, insisting that a rapper is a rapper regardless of the language of the lyrics.
CDQ, whose real name is Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf, is one of Nigeria’s musicians who spew their lyrics in the country’s local dialect.
Speaking in a hiptv interview, the Indomie crooner explained that popular Puerto Rican singer Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, known by his stage name Daddy Yankee, cannot be referred to as ‘indigenous’.
He said, “Basically there is nothing like indigenous rapper, a rapper is a rapper. You wouldn’t say someone like Daddy Yankee is an indigenous rapper despite his rapping in his local dialect.”
The rapper further said that he goes “to shows in Asia, that doesn’t make me indigenous, na international be that.. It just depends on your comfort zone.”
