A team of surgeons have successfully separated four-month-old conjoined female twins at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola, Adamawa State.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Auwal Abubakar, who led the team of surgeons revealed this to journalists on Friday in Yola.

Professor Auwal said,

“We have a successful separation of conjoined female twins (Omphilopagus). The development was recorded following a teamwork by different medical units.”

He said the surgery which was conducted on May 14, took his team four hours, noting that it was the second of its kind in the hospital.

Professor Auwal stated that the chances of the survival of the babies were excellent.

The director noted that Nigeria had medical personnel that could compete with their counterparts in developed countries.

Speaking on the development, Mr Muhammad Ramat from KasuwanShanu in Maiduguri, who is the father of the twins, thanked the management of the hospital for paying the bills for the surgery.
