American entertainer Teyana Taylor has won the Golden Globe for Best Female Supporting Actor for her role in One Battle After Another, delivering an emotional speech that resonated across the awards ceremony.

Taylor received the award on Sunday night at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, beating nominees including Ariana Grande, Emily Blunt, Amy Madigan, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas.

Visibly moved as she accepted the prize, Taylor admitted she did not expect to win.

“I almost didn’t even write a speech because I didn’t think I would win,” she said tearfully.

She dedicated the award to women of colour, saying, “Most importantly, to my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space.”

One Battle After Another emerged as one of the biggest winners of the night, leading the film categories with four awards.

The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, also earned nominations for several cast members, including Leonardo DiCaprio and rising star Chase Infiniti.

Taylor’s win marks her first-ever Golden Globe nomination and victory, despite earlier critical acclaim for her performance in A Thousand and One released in 2023.

Speaking later in the press room, Taylor reflected on her long journey in the entertainment industry.

“I’ve been doing this since I was 15 years old, and this was God reminding me that the wait is not punishment, it’s preparation,” she said.

“If everything happened on my time, I don’t even know if I would be standing here. I’m grateful I stayed patient,” she added.

In previous interviews, Taylor described her character in One Battle After Another as a woman who constantly shows up for others but is forced to confront her own identity and desires.

“It’s very rare to see a woman allowed to choose herself without being attacked for it,” she said.

With Sunday night’s victory, Taylor adds Golden Globe winner to her growing list of achievements, further cementing her place in Hollywood.
