Suspected political thugs on Monday reportedly attacked the convoy of former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in Birnin Kebbi, leading to the destruction of vehicles and injuries to several of his supporters.
Malami, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, is said to currently lead the African Democratic Congress in Kebbi State.
One of the victims of the attack confirmed to journalists that no fewer than 10 vehicles were damaged during the incident.
Reacting to the attack, Malami insisted that his visit to Birnin Kebbi was not political but strictly for condolence visits to families of prominent individuals who died during his absence from the state.
“It’s a painful act clearly linked to politics. Some thugs came out from the APC state headquarters armed with dangerous weapons and stones, attacking and destroying our convoy. The truth is, when it comes to politics in Kebbi State there is no retreat, no surrender,” Malami alleged.
However, the Kebbi State chapter of the APC has distanced itself from the incident. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafy, denied any involvement, stating that the APC remains committed to peace and political stability in the state.
“Kebbi is a peaceful state. No government that enjoys massive support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state to be disrupted,” Assalafy said.
He further alleged that it was security personnel attached to Malami’s convoy who escalated the situation by opening fire during the confrontation.
