Street protests have trailed the killing of a black girl by a Columbus police officer in Ohio, United States.

The police operative was said to have shot and killed the teenager on Tuesday after she allegedly made attempt to stab two persons with a knife.

The fatal incident happened just before a jury convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd last year.

To avail the public with more information about the tragic shooting, the Colombus Police released body camera footage of an officer shooting the girl, who was Black, as she lunged at two people with a knife, as seen in the footage of the encounter.

The girl was later identified by the Franklin County Children’s Services as Ma’Khia Bryant, 16, where she was in foster care.

According to USAToday, the suspect was pronounced dead after a police team rushed her to a hospital said.
It was, however, unclear whether anyone else was injured.

Reuters also reported that the situation developed into an uneasy tension following street protests in Ohio’s largest city.

This is just as the interim Columbus police chief, Michael Woods, said the officers involved were responding to an emergency-911 call from someone who reported an attempted stabbing at a home on the city’s southeast side.

USAToday added that the protesters chanted, “Say her name!” While others signified the victim’s age by yelling, “she was just a kid” as officers on bicycles pushed protesters back and threatened to deploy pepper spray on the crowd.

At the time of this report, the officer who appears to be white in the video remains unnamed but “would be taken off the street” pending an investigation, according to the chief.
