Tenants arraigned for allegedly assaulting landlord

Two tenants, Orukpe Bright, 27, and Rosemary Aikoregie, 36, who allegedly assaulted their landlord, Mr Ogiesoba Amos, were on Tuesday brought before an Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin City.

The tenants are being tried for unlawful assault.

The prosecutor, ASP Violet Shoyemi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Oct.1, 2019 at No. 5, 3rd Nekpenekpe Lane, Benin City.

Shoyemi said that Bright and Aikoregie allegedly assaulted their landlord by punching him with fist blows.

He said that the offence contravened Section 351 of the Criminal Code Cap 48.

Newsmen report that, Section 351 prescribes one-year jail term for assault in the Laws of the Defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976 applicable in Edo.

Following their plea of not guilty; the magistrate, Mrs Esosa Osifo-Ehigiegbe, released the defendants on bail of N50,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Osifo-Ehigiegbe said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and also be residing within the magisterial jurisdiction.

The magistrate also fixed Jan. 29 for hearing.
