Ten Hag blames off-field issues for Antony flop

Published

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has pointed out that off-field issues are impacting the performance of winger Antony.

The Brazilian player is facing a police investigation following allegations of domestic abuse made by three women. While Antony denies the allegations, he has struggled on the field, registering no goals or assists in 21 appearances this season.

Ten Hag stated, “I think his off-field issues stop him playing,” emphasizing that Antony needs to address these challenges.

The 23-year-old, signed for £82m from Ajax, has the support of the club, but Ten Hag stressed that Antony must improve.

Antony, who had an impressive record at Ajax, scoring 24 goals and providing 22 assists in 82 appearances, has seen a decline in performance since the international break in September. Antony’s ex-partner and two others made assault allegations during that period.

Manchester United responded seriously to the allegations, granting Antony leave with full pay to address the accusations.

Despite returning to training in late September and resuming action in October, Antony has struggled to match his previous performance levels.

Ten Hag expressed disappointment with Antony’s recent performances, stating, “But from the moment he was out and then he came back, he didn’t deliver the performance we should expect from him, and he can do so much better.”

The manager highlighted Antony’s capabilities, mentioning his high end product during his time at Ajax, and expressed confidence in the player’s ability to return to that level.

Regarding Jadon Sancho’s recent loan move to Borussia Dortmund, Ten Hag wished him well and acknowledged the public dispute that led to Sancho’s exile from the Manchester United team. Ten Hag expressed hope that Sancho does well and becomes a success at Borussia Dortmund.
